Power and Culture, including language, art and architecture
The exact priorities, pathways and detailed work-plan of the TWG responsible for Theme 2 will be defined by the Group itself and will follow the general scheme outlined in the proposal. It is foreseen that it will take up and examine in a comparative and connected manner the complex ways in which power systems define and use culture, and how culture is used to express different relations toward power and different hierarchies of power. Relevant centres of interest in this thematic workgroup are the relationship between nationalism and national languages, linguistic minorities; the development of national literatures and their relationship to political independence. Forms of artistic expression will be considered in their social and political context, as will architecture – including landscape architecture – as symbols of specific forms of power. Contextualisation of public and private buildings and monuments (palaces, housing styles, government buildings, museums, universities, etc.) as symbols of power and identities will be considered. Art historians and philologists are among the organisers of the group.
