Europe and the World

Once again the exact priorities, pathways and specific work plan of the TWG responsible for Theme 1 will be defined by the Group itself and will follow the general scheme outlined. However we foresee that this TWG will deal particularly, though not exclusively, with the complex and unresolved relations with the rest of the world that emerged from the experience of exploration, conquest, colonization and de-colonization. The competences within the group and the participants from the Inner Circle (including the South African University of Durban-Westville, soon to become the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) are such that the theme can be examined from the points of view of the transmission and re-elaboration of culture, immigration and emigration, the development of shared political forms, and perhaps most important for the development of European citizenship today, the formation and sedimentation of attitudes towards other populations which developed in the colonial period.
