Tickets to Reykjavik (Keflavik) for December meeting
Dear All,
You have all received our confirmation that the Second Plenary Meeting will take place in Reykjavik on 8 and 9 December (arrival 7 December, departure 10 December, except for Coordinating Committee members who are asked to come on 6 December).
We also sent you a list of available flights prepared by Gudmundur, which we are sending again for your convenience:
Iceland can be reached by air from various points in Europe (the airport is called Keflavik). The main carriers are Icelandair and Iceland Express. Icelandair has two daily flights from both Copenhagen and London Heathrow (three flights to/from Copenhagen on Thursdays and Sundays), daily flights to/from Stockholm and Oslo, four times a week to/from Glasgow (Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays), Amsterdam (Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays), Frankfurt (Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays), and Paris (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays). Iceland Express flies daily to/from London Stansted and Copenhagen (two flights to/from Copenhagen on Thursdays and Sundays). Moreover, British Airways flies to/from Gatwick on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
If you go to the sites indicated, you will see that you can purchase (on-line) quite economical tickets now. We strongly recommend that you purchase the tickets immediately: as Gudmundur says, as time passes, the prices will increase sharply.
As you know, in theory the Network can reimburse you for Low Cost or Economy tickets. In the case of Iceland, if you simply ask for a single round trip ticket from your home to Keflavik, there will almost certainly be two companies involved and the ticket may be very expensive, and we will go over the Network budget.
So we ask you please:
1. whenever possible please buy a low cost or economy ticket to a place from which Iceland Air or Iceland Express or British fly (as listed in Gudmundur's note) and, leaving a very good number of hours between flights as a safety margin, purchase one of the low cost tickets available to Keflavik. (Maybe there will be interesting pre-Plenary meetings in several European aiports on 7 December!).
2. In any case, please shop around and ask various travel agencies or consolidators rather that taking the first solution that is offered to you.
We add that if you have any doubts or problems, please consult with Gudmundur (ghalfd@hi.is). There are many convenient busses between the vaious London airports (Stansted, Heathrow, Gatwick etc.). It should be possible to find low cost combinations to Keflavik for less than 500€ from nearly any place in Europe.
Your care and speed in purchasing your ticket will be to the advantage of all.
Thank you
Kathy and Gudmundur
