CLIOHRES.net
CLIOHRES.net ("Creating Links and Innovative Overviews for a New
History Research Agenda for the Citizens of a Growing Europe") is a
Sixth Framework Programme Network of Excellence organized by a group of
45 universities. A five year project, it aims at achieving and
disseminating greater understanding of both the actual histories and
the self-representations of the past current in Europe today,
highlighting both diversities and connections and explaining the
context of their development. The Thematic Work Group of Power and
Culture holds its meeting in Turku in connection with the Conference
Human Faces of Power, and the members of the programme contribute to
the conference programme. CLIOHRES.net publications are available at
the conference book exhibition.

Contemporary History focuses on teaching and researching the recent
history of politics, international relations and the society. Most of
the teaching at the Department is in Finnish, but some lecture courses
are given in English. The History and Politics of European Integration
and East Asian Studies programs are also in English.
Empowerment and disempoverment in Finland 1550-1980
The
prime concern of the project is to study less visible and more informal
relationships of power, instead of focusing on overt and
institutionalized forms of exerting power. Together, the specific
research themes open the diversity of actions for empowerment and
disempowerment in Finnish history in a way in which a united analysis
of the changing face of power tactics is facilitated. The research
group is working in the School of History in University of Turku, and
the Conference Human Faces of Power is part of it. The project is part
of the larger research programme Power and Society in Finland, financed
by the Academy of Finland.
